PASADENA (CNS) - Chlorine fumes caused minor eye irritation to two
workers at Caltech today and prompted officials to close the library and
several other buildings while crews vented some tunnels that link campus
buildings, authorities said.
The problem was reported about 5:30 a.m. in a tunnel beneath the
Millikan Library at the college in the 1200 block of East California Boulevard,
said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.
About 20 construction workers and cleaning personnel were evacuated from
the tunnels, and firefighters used fans to ventilate the area, Derderian said.
The chlorine was being used by workers involved in a water-treatment
process, Derderian said.
