ALHAMBRA – Alhambra Mayor Gary Yamauchi and his city council will be working to solidify a responsible budget for the 2011-12 calendar year in the next several weeks; it is scheduled to be completed in June. The council is in negotiations with the fire department but is doubtful there will be money for raises this year.
The city’s operating budget increases every year by about $1 million or more because it is responsible for paying retiree pensions and cost of living adjustments. The mayor said that Alhambra is doing relatively well financially in comparison to other cities but must move forward “or it’ll end up winding up like some run down place that doesn’t keep up with the times.”
In other Alhambra news, Shannon Heng was crowned city-wide baking champion Monday night, receiving $250 in cash and $100 worth of gift certificates from Alhambra’s finest restaurants. She beat out 30 entrants in a competition encouraged by Yamauchi. Those who participated received Fosselman's Ice Cream gift certificates.
Alhambra recently completed beautifying Valley Boulevard from the 710 Freeway to Garfield Avenue and also welcomes Sears to the community. The mayor will soon announce a book donation day.
