LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Strong offshore winds swept the Southland today amid
plummeting humidity levels, prompting the National Weather Service to warn of
a high risk of wildfire.
In and near Los Angeles County, a red flag warning indicating conditions
conducive to wildfire went into effect at 10 p.m. Thursday in the Santa
Clarita Valley, the Angeles National Forest, the San Gabriel Mountains and the
Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area. It was scheduled to remain in effect
until 6 p.m. today.
Also in effect -- until 3 p.m. -- was a wind advisory. But the Los
Angeles Fire Department did not impose ``red flag' parking restrictions
designed to facilitate the movement of fire trucks on hilly streets.
NWS forecasters said they expect humidity levels to drop to the single
digits today in several areas of the region already plagued by bone-dry
vegetation. Also expected are sustained winds of between 15 and 35 miles per
hour, gusting to 50 mph in the mountains, 40 mph in the valleys and up to 35
mph in coastal areas.
The strongest wind gusts as of 7:45 a.m. today were in mountain locales
at Camp Nine (53 mph) and Warm Springs (51 mph), according to the weather
service. In the Malibu Hills, a gust of 41 mph was recorded overnight.
Gusty cross winds will create hazardous driving conditions, especially
for motorists driving high-profile vehicles, according to an NWS advisory.
Motorists are likeliest to feel the effects of the high winds on
Interstate 5 and the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in and near the San Gabriels,
Malibu Canyon Road and Topanga Canyon Road in the Santa Monicas, and the Golden
State (5) Freeway and State route 126 in the Santa Clarita Valley, it said.
The offshore winds were expected to diminish Saturday, but low humidity
levels were expected to persist.
Along with the offshore winds will come warm temperatures today. The NWS
forecast highs of 61 in Palmdale, 62 in Lancaster; 63 on Mount Wilson; 69 in
Newport Beach; 70 in Saugus; 71 in Avalon; 76 in Burbank and at LAX; 77 in Pasadena;
78 in downtown L.A; 79 in Long Beach, Anaheim and San Gabriel; and 80
in Woodland Hills.
Temperatures will drop by about three degrees Saturday, then by up to
another 10 degrees on Sunday but start inching back up on Wednesday.
