
Celebrate Labor Day in style and send summer packing at a party that recalls the legendary shindigs hosted by Descanso's original owner E. Manchester Boddy in the 1930s and '40s. Descanso Gardens will put out the welcome mat for Boddy's Big Backyard from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6, with fun for young and old. At 10 a.m., take a guided walk of the California Natives Garden with Horticulturist Rachel Young, who will showcase improved access to this favorite garden. The walk begins at the Center Circle.Gather youngsters in the Under the Oaks Theater for a reading of “Teddy Bears' Picnic” at 12:30 p.m.Kick out the jams with music by the Mobile Homeboys from 1 to 3 p.m. The band will perform in the Under the Oaks Theater. Bring a picnic and blanket to the Main Lawn (normally not allowed in the Gardens) or purchase barbecue from Patina Catering from 11:30 to 3 p.m.Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and students, $3 children 5 to 12, free for children 4 and younger.
