INDIO (CNS) - A woman who was rescued today after falling about 10 feet
into a well hole in Indio near the Coachella music festival grounds escaped
serious injury, according to the fire department.
The accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of Monroe
Street and Avenue 50. The location is about a block north of the Empire Polo
Grounds, which hosted the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival over the
weekend.
Firefighters freed the unidentified woman and took her to a hospital for
treatment of minor injuries, said Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire.
Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron did not know whether the woman had
attended the final day of the concert series or if alcohol or drugs played a
factor.
Much of the land surrounding the polo grounds is currently or was once
farmland, he noted.
``If you go there in the dark and don't know the territory, you can end
up like this lady,' he said.
The woman was walking with a companion, who called 911 after she fell
into the hole, Guitron said.
