The Titan Boys beat the San gabriel Matadors 100-26 last Thursday and was even more dominating on the girls side, where the Lady Titans won their side of the competition 104 – 9.
The Lady Titans were led by a trio of outstanding performance from senior Kim Silverstein, junior Sarah Tolley and sophomore Meredith Scannell, all taking complimentary races.
Silverstein won the 110 High Hurdles (:17.81) and then blew away the pack in the 300 Low Hurdles (:55.20). Tolley gutted out her two big wins in the 1600 Meters (6:08) and then in the 3200.
No official time was available because Tolley actually ran nearly 3600 Meters before she was told she’d finished a lap earlier.
The breakout performance of the meet, however, came from sophomore Meredith Scannell. Scannell took the 400 (1:06) and the 200 (:28.1).
In several events, San Marino took the top four spots. Following Silverstein in the 110 High Hurdles were sophomores Jackie Hackett, Sarah Scholl, and Sabrina Jen. The 1600 was also swept by the Lady Titans. Following Tolley across the finish line were senior Jasmine Quan-Liu and freshman Sasha Natchaev.
The Lady Titans swept the 800 as well, led by junior Nikki Miller (2:44), and followed by freshman trio of Charlene Hsu, Netchaev and Andrea Mejia.
Kelly McCloskey won the Triple Jump (28’1”) and was a member of the winning 4 x 100 team (:54.18) that also included seniors Nicole Chan, Katie Grech, and sophomore Kathy Cheung. McCloskey also picked up a 3rd place in the Long Jump.
Hackett won the discus (55’5”) and grabbed second in the Shot Put. Cheung won the Shot (27’7.5”) and finished 2nd in the 200 Meters – a combination of points you’re not likely to see again soon.
On the boys side, seniors Michael Hsieh and Cristian Raether took first in each of their three events.
Hsieh handily won the 110 High Hurdles (:17.25) and ran away with the 300 IM Hurdles (:46.00). Hsieh is one of the pre-season favorites to win both these events in league finals.
He also ran on the winning 4 x 400 team (3:51). The boys 4 x 400 team is one of the strongest the school has had in many years. Last year, this group (Hsieh, Raether, Johnny Blanchard and Josh Neale) went undefeated until League Finals, and beat John Muir High School in the CIF Prelims. The entire team returns this year.
San Marino is so deep in the 400 Meters this year that the Titan Frosh-Soph team beat the Matador Varsity 4 x 400 squad by nearly half a lap.
Raether blazed across the finish line at :52.38 in the 400, an exceptionally quick time for this early in the seaon. Raether added more points by finishing 2nd in the high jump.
The 4 x 100 team is entirely new this year (Kevin Lu, Raether, Johnny Blanchard, and Rocco Giancaspro.) But with a :48.18 in their opening run, they look to be a very competitive squad. Another multi-event winner was senior Arturo Vargas, who won shot put (37’) and the high jump (5’2”), and added in a third place finish in the discus.
In the middle distances, the sophomore duo of Sean Silva and Coco Raether split the 1600 and the 800. Silva took the longer race (5:11), with Raether finishing second. That order was reversed in the 800, with Raether (2:22) cruising in ahead of Silva.
Junior distance standout Raymond Nhan easily won the 3200 meter run with a leisurely 11:56 and grabbed 4th in the 1600. Kevin Lu (:12.1) led a Titan sweep of the 100 Meters, followed by Chris Dumont and Scott Dooley. Dumont also took third in the Triple Jump, while Dooley tied with Nathan Yuan for the Long Jump (16’6”) and grabbed a 2nd in the Triple Jump. Yuan won the Triple (34’10”). Lu picked up a 2nd in the 200 Meters, followed by 3rd place winner Blanchard. Blanchard also grabbed a 3rd in the 400. Matt Hsu took 2nd the shot and the discus, and sophomore Ben Harwich got a 3rd in the shot.
The competition should be considerably tougher when the Titans travel to Duarte this afternoon. Duarte is one of the traditional powers in area track.
The JV Boys topped San Gabriel 76-42.
